A standard football sock is smooth against the boot and smooth against your foot. Every cut, stop and planted shot moves your foot a few millimetres inside the boot before the boot responds. Over a match that costs you sharpness, and it rubs blisters into the heel and the ball of the foot.
Grip socks remove that slide. The result is simple: quicker turns, a cleaner planted foot when you strike, and far fewer blisters after a heavy week of training.
If you train twice a week and play on the weekend, you need three pairs. Grip socks get washed more than anything else in the bag, and one pair will not cover a week without going back on damp. The 3 pack at $40 works out at $13.33 a pair against $19.99 for a single.
Youth (5 to 8) covers junior players, Adult (6 to 12) covers everyone else. Fit them snug. A grip sock that is loose will move with your foot rather than holding it, which is the one thing it is meant to prevent.
At training, most players wear them on their own. On match day, where club socks are part of the kit, players usually cut the grip sock below the calf and pull club socks over the top. Both work, and nothing in the laws of the game stops you wearing grip socks underneath.
Wash cold, inside out, and air dry. Heat is what degrades silicon grip pads, so keep them out of the dryer. Treated that way the cotton usually outlasts a season of regular use.
Grip socks pair naturally with compression shorts and a compression top for training. If you want the background on grip socks before you buy, our guide to the best grip socks for performance and comfort covers what to look for. Clubs and schools ordering for a squad should use club orders for volume pricing.
They have silicon grip pads printed on the sole. That is what creates the anti slip hold against the boot's footbed. A branded sock without grip pads does not do this.
